Come Eat Here and See Why I love to Eat in Saigon!
Over my left shoulder, I can see the latest in the world’s 2012 architectural design – the 68-story Bitexco Financial Tower in downtown Saigon.
Over my right shoulder, a half-dozen young Vietnamese men are hand-washing Hai’s motorbike for 20,000 VND ($1 USD).
Looking straight ahead, down a small, yet clean and tidy alleyway, I see my lunch table. And when the revving motorbike passes, the loudest noise around is the virile rooster 10 feet from my table. The friendly alley puppy looks up from beside my table and bats his eyes trying to do some meaningful lunchtime bonding.
Welcome to Saigon!
Welcome to my favorite Bún Thịt Nướng in Saigon – at Chị Thông. NEW NAME (APRIL 2015): Chị Tuyền
Bún Thịt Nướng, a food of South Vietnam, is a bowl of cool noodles (not served warmed) sitting atop a chopped, crunchy, and delicious salad mixture that blends an amazing number of textures and flavors. Lettuce, crisp cucumbers and bean sprouts, crunchy carrots, tasty green onions, toasted peanuts, sweet sugar, spicy pepper ~ YUM!
Yet, at Chị Tuyền it all comes together subtly, so as not to overwhelm the tender, marinated B-B-Q pork here that is amazingly flavorful and for which they are famous. I believe this may be the best pork in Saigon (Tuyen & her mom have been serving this dish up for 37 years!!) As an extra reward to yourself for finding this special eatery, ask for an order of chả giò (crispy fried Vietnamese egg rolls). It will be served together with your bún thịt nướng, and together they will deliver you a happy tummy and a great day!
Chị Tuyền is open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner (NOTE: Randomly closed on Sundays). Chị Tuyền can be readily walked from the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area, and yet feels very distant from Saigon’s tourist-central. A very special culinary treat – and so accessible.
UPDATE – April 2013: Now Chị Tuyền will deliver their great food to you door in Saigon – miễn phí (free of charge)!
UPDATE – February 2018: Chị Tuyền has moved once again … but only a few doors down. The best news is that the food just keeps getting better!
Open 6:00 am – 10:00 pm
NEW ADDRESS as of February 2018:

Delightful, thx for the advice, 42 000 dng.
Hey guys, just wanted to let you that your blog is amazing! I’ve visited 2 places this visit to him and they were awesome! I’ll definitely continue using this as my foodie guide to hcm! Thanks!
Wow … so great to hear you’re enjoying sharing our eating adventures. Let us know if you discover some other favorites!
Hello, i just wanted to say i bookmarked your site and enjoy reading all your deliciuos insights on places to eat. I am so excited to try this place but i don’t see any prices listed on the menu. I’m always weary about places not listing prices. What should the cost be for a bowl of that yummy looking bun thit nuong cha gio?
hi Lisa, It’s great to hear you’ll plan to use our site for some of your Saigon eating adventures! You know, prices at 98% of the places I talk about are so inexpensive that I often don’t bother mentioning price issues (only if things are particularly expensive). I recall the bun thit nuong cha gio is about 35 -40,000 vnd ($2 usd).ENJOY!
Hello Joe (& Hai)! Thank you so much for this awesome blog. I was so excited to visit Vietnam for the first time since I left with my family 20 years ago. I was especially looking forward to eating delicious food here. My first meal the night I landed was absolutely lackluster at a random cafe in the backpackers area. Fortunately, I found this site and my visit to Vietnam was saved!!
The thit nuong at Chi Thong’s is AMAZING! I’ve also tried your other equally delicious recommendations including ca kho to (so good!), bitter melon soup, pho ga, banh mi, ga nuong lu, com tam & banh uot/cuon. I hope to hit a couple more places before my flight to nha trang tomorrow. Again, THANK YOU FOR THIS FANTASTIC FOODIE BLOG! Keep up the awesome job!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Minh. It’s so wonderful to hear that you also loved some of our favorite eateries. Before you head off to Nha Trang, try to take a look at our blog about our 4 day trip there. You might enjoy it. https://www.eatingsaigon.com/2012/07/26/leaving-saigon-for-street-food-in-nha-trang-2/ HAPPY TRAVELS, Joe & Hai
np! Definitely well deserved praised. Currently in Nha Trang and will check out the bun ca place now! btw– We checked out the banh khot banh xeo place you mentioned in Saigon on our last day. The restaurant has changed name and ownership and I believe the quality of food has suffered. We ordered the banh khot shrimp and banh xeo pork and shrimp and both were no where near as delicious as your other recommendations.
Oi troi oi Minh! I apologize. Bánh Khọt Co Ba Vũng Tàu recently moved across and down the street. I’m so sorry you had a so-so meal at the ‘wrong” place. Tonight I updated my site with their new location. Please enjoy Nha Trang!
Thank you so much for the recommendation. We decided to make up for the disappointment of not being able to get a place at the foodie tour (they were fully booked for the whole week), by going out for some Bún Thịt Nướng at Chị Thôngand and our disappointed spirits bounced straight back up! The mix of flavours was spot on and the juice at the bottom of the plate gave the whole dish that “is it acceptable to lick the plate” lingering taste. Tomorrow we will go out in search of your friend Hai’s restaurant.
So glad to hear you enjoyed Bún Thịt Nướng at Chị Thông … it’s one of my favorites here! I hope you’ll also enjoy’s Hai’s food. His Ca Kho To is perhaps my favorite food in Vietnam! Enjoy your travels … and your eating adventures 🙂
yummy…how much a bowl of noodle like this cost?
About 40,000vnd ($2.00 USD), including your napkin and bottomless glass of ice tea 🙂 !!
Going to HCMC next month during my birthday! Will definitely want to try this! Thanks for all the reviews!
Happy Birthday … enjoy Saigon! One small caution: “Chi Thong” Bun Thit Nuong 187 seems to close on random Sundays.
I stumbled across this by accident and I totally agree. It’s the best.
If its not sweet flavor then it is good. I wonder why they cook with sugar, this flavor is really different with “Bun Thit Nuong in DaNang”.
