When the French left Vietnam in 1954, they left behind incredibly delicious baguettes and some of the best coffee in the world.
Vietnamese coffee is like no other. Strong, bitter, typically served with sweetened condensed milk.
A real jolt of flavor!
Vietnam is now one of the world’s largest exporters of coffee and Saigon and Hanoi’s youth generation may now spend more time in cafes than at work and home combined!
Highlands Coffee is Vietnam’s Starbucks-Wanna-Be; and Trung Nguyen is Vietnam’s original local favorite.
But, street-coffee vendors now fill city center.
And trendy gardened cafes are filled with young patrons leaning over lap-tops and cell phones – day and night!
Cà Phê Sữa Đá (coffee with milk and ice) is supreme in southern Vietnam and Sữa Chua Cà Phê Đá (yogurt over crushed ice with a shot of expresso) takes the prize as a one-of-a-kind refreshing Hanoi summer drink.
If you MUST have a cup of great “western” coffee (and I admit, sometimes, I succumb) Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is spreading throughout Saigon (with great internet too).
