I walked into this tiny shop and the young Vietnamese woman behind the cupcake case greeted me with a beautiful smile, a “Good morning” and asked, “Chocolate? Strawberry? Lemon? Almond? Coffee?”

WAIT WAIT ... I’m still coming to grips with Cupcakes in Saigon!

I was walking down a District 1 Saigon street on a noble errand … getting some exercise and heading to the Mobiphone main service center to see why I couldn’t get my cell phone 3G service to work. It was hot and I just glanced up, noticing a Pacy Cupcake sign.  I glanced down again at the street – and quickly glanced back up -What? Cupcakes? Here in Saigon? Do they mean like cupcake cupcakes?

I changed my course, crossed the street to investigate, and stepped inside.

Oh for goodness sake, who’s idea was this? Never in a million years would I have expected.  Now normally I’m not one to eat sweets mid-day.  However, how does one pass up such an unforeseen opportunity?  OK, well maybe just one …  or two. My sweet tooth was now in total control.

The tiny shop has a compact cupcake display case immediately inside the front door.  And very cool cupcake take-away boxes.

However, if you care to enjoy a cup of hot tea of coffee and savor a cupcake or two, just head up the stairs to the 2nd level. It’s small, cozy, sweet, and pleasant. A few fun window seats and mid-day you might have the place to yourself to write some postcards while you enjoy that banana-chocolate cupcake.

The cupcakes themselves?  Well, they brought back memories  of my mom, my sisters and I baking away in our New Jersey kithen, licking the batter bowl, and enjoying some wonderful treats together.

Pacey cupcakes are a bit on the small side (perhaps best for waistline issues.) And not cheap by Saigon standards.  But very yummy, about 30,000 VND each ($1.50 USD).

UPDATE – March, 2016:  Had a cup-cake (double chocolate)/coffee combo this afternoon, enjoyed the pleasant music, air conditioning and great wifi.  Still a lovely little retreat.
