One of my favorite memories from my years living in Hanoi (already 10 years ago now), is a small cháo lòng eatery just a few blocks from my apartment there. On a chilly Hanoi winter morning, there was nothing better for breakfast than enjoying a hot bowl of rice porridge filled with tasty, chewy chicken innards, topped with chopped green onions, a drop or two of fish sauce, a squeeze of lime, and a dash of chili pepper. Ngon! (Yum!)
Much of that Yum! memory was brought back recently while Hai and I were enjoying (I mean “working”) on our newest Eating Saigon! neighborhood food exploration stroll. Just a few blocks from our wonderful little studio apartment, BonBon Residence, we walked by and considered a mì vịt tiềm (duck noodle soup) eatery, a sinh tố (fresh fruit shake) cafe, and a fresh seafood restaurant, among other little neighborhood delights.
But, it was the Chiều Cháo Lòng sign, a cute little doggie looking up at us from the eatery’s entry, and the smiling waiter that captured my attention and lured us in.
Let’s Eat Here!
As always, Hai immediately went to the cooking station, bonded with the cook, Hoang, and talked ingredients and recipes. I spent quality time with the eatery’s canine and waiter … and placed my order.
The cháo lòng was filled, rather than with chicken innards, with pig parts. Fresh, flavorful and chewy pig parts – liver, heart, stomach, and intestines.
The highlight, however, was the rice gruel, itself. A perfectly textured creamy rice paste, with of essence of pork meat blended with mild and delicious herbs and spices. Delicately delicious and easy on the belly, another wonderful cháo lòng memory was born!
Meanwhile, Hai learned that Hoang has been turning out her delicious cháo lòng here for over 25 years. And her recipes had their roots in her mother-in-law’s cháo lòng business at the Thị Nghè Market nearly 80 years ago.
Another great find in our new exploration of this wonderful little neighborhood.
OPEN: 1:00 – 7:00 PM
UPDATE – February, 2019: One of the first places to re-open after Tet in the neighborhood … and still great cháo lòng (their little dog is getting really fat – suggest you don’t feed him food from the table 🙂 !!!)
UPDATE – January, 2020: Still love the cháo here – just delicious!
