So we all know very well that Vietnamese cuisine is probably the best/most delicious on the planet. Particularly those of us who have spent some quality time enjoying our meals sitting on small plastic stools in the narrow back alleys of Saigon, Hanoi, or any one of Vietnam’s countryside villages or beach towns.
However, when is comes to dessert, it is a bit more challenging for those of us possessing a sweet tooth, to find a happy ending to our Vietnamese meals.
Yes, of course, there’s that amazing fruit plate covered in a sweetened condensed milk sauce. And ice cream smothered black sticky rice at Trop B.
Oh, and that BBQ’d, coconut milk covered banana that’s won so many awards across Southeast Asia at Chè Chuối Nướng Út Lúa.
Or, for a select few, a tasty (?) scoop of fresh durian fruit.
BUT, after enjoying all of those classic Vietnamese dessert treats, where does one go to satisfy his/her craving for more traditional (in a Western sense) sweet treat??
Well, Eating Saigon! readers likely know by now that for chocolate addicts who need to get their perfect chocolate fix, there’s no better place in Saigon (or maybe the world) than Maison Marou.
Earlier this year, however, Hai and I were intoduced to another option that just might challenge Maison Marou…. certainly not in its mastery of chocolate treats, but in its overall combination of great Vietnamese coffee and a lovely garden ambiance together with delectable sweet treats – Fly Cupcake Garden.
Okay, agreed, the name of this cafe needs some work. But once you get past the name, it’s all sweet sailing.
Fly Cupcake Garden was recommended by our friend, Lam, owner of Đảo Hoa Vàng, where Hai and I had spent several wonderful days enjoying the beauty and tranquility of his small beach-side homestay in Cam Lập Peninsula (do yourself a favor and visit this amazing area on the central Vietnamese coast!) Lam learned of my passion for both good coffee and sweet treats and assured us Fly Cupcake Garden was where we had to meet when we re-united in Saigon. He turned out to be right … very right!
The rest can best be understood by avoiding a thousand words and simply beholding pictures of the lovely settings and various goodies that Hai and I and our friends enjoyed together over several visits to Fly Cupcake Garden.
A great place to relax, sip your coffee, smoothie or special fruit drink, savor a cupcake (or two) and chat away the hours with good friends.
UPDATE – January, 2020: Still lovely, still peaceful, still an excellent selection of coffees, teas, desserts, and fruit drinks of all types!
UPDATE – February 2023: They have a new name. They’ve lost their yummy dessert selection of cakes & cupcakes, but still serve one of the best cappuccinos in Saigon.
OPEN: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM
