Well, it’s been nearly three years since Hai and I set foot in Vietnam, jumped on a motorbike, put chopstick to phở, mi, mien or bún, and thereafter, put pen to paper to share the joy right here on Eating Saigon!
But, the nightmare of Covid has now subsided, borders have re-opened, Vietnam has begun to issue visitor visas again (perhaps modified yet again), and we’ve departed California on our way to Saigon – about to land at Tan son Nhat airport momentarily!
But, where to begin???
Should we start with perhaps the best and certainly the most authentic Cơm Tấm breakfast on the planet – CƠM TẤM 43?
Or, given the timing of our arrival in Ho Chi Minh City, go directly to lunch at my personal favorite Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang in Saigon – ĐẠT THÀNH?
Wherever we begin today, surely tonight’s introductory welcome back evening meal will have to start in a narrow, dark alley for the most delicious Vietnamese “pizza” ever – NO-NAME VIET PIZZERIA.
Then, likely followed by perhaps Saigon’s best mì quảng – MÌ QUẢNG HỘI AN.
And, there’s no doubt that tomorrow, my morning coffee will be savored at CAFÉ TARTINE SAIGON with a scrumptious sourdough treat …
just a short walk from our always wonderful long-term stay at BONBON RESIDENCES.
BUT … Will our favorite Saigon neighborhood restaurants and street food vendors still be serving the best Saigon street food on the planet? Or have they fallen to this city’s severe Covid lockdowns during recent years?
And finally, what amazing new eateries in Saigon’s tourist centers may have appeared? Or what traditional Saigon street food vendors may have newly appeared in the city’s narrow neighborhood alleys?
We’re about to find out! And certainly, we’ll let you know what we discover right here.
Looking forward to ask the reviews! My wife and I are planning on returning for the first time since COVID-19 in July. We may need to to scout out some old favorites for us like Quán Bảy Đực 😊

YES – Quán Bảy Đực – a favorite of ours as well! Hoping to get there right after the Tet holidays.
